Hurricane Katrina

Our yard from the porch.

Looking down our front steps.

Monday, August 29, 2005 (9 a.m.)

The water begins to rise.

Our yard from the back deck.

Our street from the front porch.

1:40 pm from our back deck and the water continues to rise.

Across the street from our back deck.

Down the street, from the deck again.

3:00 pm the water seems to recede a little.

View of Dad's carport from the porch.

The yard from the front porch.

The rain gauge registered only 6 inches of rain, almost exactly.

But look at the water level.

Brother on the way back from his "rescue mission."

Ducks in the street. Alas, I didn't take pics of the fish, crabs, shrimp, turtles and such that swam across our front steps and porch. However after a few days, they disappeared.

6:00 pm, my dad's truck which we moved to the back yard and jacked up, begins to emerge from the receding water. At the peak of the storm, the water covered all but the very top. However, the water was still at this level when we left on Sept. 4th.

More photos from our week on our "island."

Surprisingly, this weathervane survived.

The roof and paint didn't survive though.

Dad, mom and brother - post-hurricane party.

Helicopters flew over the neighborhood all day, every day. We lost more slates on our roof to helicopters than to the storm itself.

Abandoned pit bull #1 across the street.

Abandoned pit bull #2 next door to #1. These dogs were tied up and cried all the time.

Rescue basket being lowered across the street.

The rescue helicopter.

And another successful rooftop rescue.

Photos after the storm

Our Driveway.

Another View down the street (North).

Same street, other direction (South).

The First Message left by the Texas Wildlife and Fisheries on the front of the house the day after we all left/evacuated.

The message left below the first when they came through searching for bodies. The date: October 1 (top) unit # (left side) 0 living found(right side) 0 dead found (bottom).

Our Front Steps when we returned home to clean.

Looking in the yard from the front porch.

Peeking out the back gate.

A present left by the receding waters.

The water pushed this fence and pulled its cement base out of the ground.

Our yard from the back.

Another view of our yard. This was a beautiful Japanese Plum Tree.

Our yard from the back deck.

My dad's truck now dry.

The storage area under the house in the back.

My uncle's roofing supplies in the rear side yard of our house.

Weeks later

Cars down the street.

The trees are different colors depending on how long the different parts stayed submerged.

Main thoroughfare. Hardly any traffic. No lights.

Looking down the same street in the other direction.

Another message.

Many of our "neighbors" looted this Winn Dixie.
